Traveling to and in Bogotá-Where to stay

How to get to our wedding, where to stay, and how to travel around Bogotá. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to reach out! We are so excited to celebrate with you and want you to have the best time.

Travel Note

DON'T RENT A CAR

Driving in Colombia is not for the faint hearted. Save yourself the headache!

Travel from the aiport

When you arrive to Bogotá, keep an eye on your luggage at all times, and avoid the many, many people that will approach you saying "uber" or "taxi". There are supervised Taxi dispatch services right outside the terminal, follow the signs or step outside and locate the taxi lines. You will rarely need to wait in line for more than 10 minutes to get your taxi. These taxi services most often than not require cash payments at the end, and will be around $10-$20 USD depending on where you are staying. There is a currency exchange booth in the baggage claim, but their rates are pretty bad so exchange a small ammount to get you through the day $50-$100 before you find a currency exchange place outside the airport. Some hotels also offer airport shuttle services, so make sure to take advantage of those and reserve ahead of time!

Staying safe in Bogotá and around Colombia

Bogotá is an absolutely massive city, home to almost 9 million people. As in any major city, use common sense and be aware of your surroundings. Borrowed from a travel blog: Don’t flash your valuables, including your phone, cash, and credit cards. Don’t wander around dark alleys at night on your own. Be aware of your surroundings, especially if you’re traveling solo. Avoid taxis to avoid being scammed. Uber operates in a gray area in Colombia’s major cities at the time of this writing, but do a quick search on the latest info on rideshare before you go. We recommend taking Uber Comfort. It is very affordable and you'll get arounf safely and comfortably. Be extra cautious on public transportation. The TransMilenio bus network is a popular, budget-friendly way to get around. It’s also a popular venue for pickpockets. You generally shouldn’t keep anything in your pockets in Bogotá. Choose overnights in a well-lit area of the city. Zona Rosa and Usaquén are both great options. La Candelaria is the historic center, but it can still get a little sketchy at night despite the city’s best efforts. No dar papaya. We learned this one on one of our walking tours. It literally means, “Don’t give papaya.” Petty theft is alive and well in the city, so don’t make yourself an easy mark. Keep an eye on your stuff at all times.

Travel Note

Travel around the city

We strongly discourage out of town travelers from renting a car. Ubers are very inexpensive, and you will save yourself the headache of driving in Bogotá! Trust us, you will see what we mean when you get here. Through the Uber app, we recommend you book "Uber Comfort". Ubers as you know them are technically illegal, and you are typically required to sit in the front seat. Uber comfort hires specialized white SUVs that are legal, and you can sit comfortably in the back seat.

Where can we stay?

Note that the wedding will take place about an hour outside of Bogotá. Saturday traffic is pretty terrible, so we recommend staying closer to the venue the night before and the night of the event for ease of travel. Below, we list some convenient options of places in northern Bogotá or north of Bogotá. Once we know where everyone wants to stay, we can help arrange transportation to the wedding.
