Travel

San Luis Obispo is located on the beautiful California central coast, between the Pacific Ocean to the west and mountains to the east. Coming from out of state? We recommend that you arrive by early afternoon on Saturday, the 23rd so that you can join us for an afternoon of wine tasting.

Travel Note

Getting Around SLO

SLO is very compact and you probably won’t need to go anywhere that is more than a 15-minute drive. So, using a ride-sharing app (e.g., Uber or Lyft) is an easy and inexpensive way to get around. Since it is a college town, there are usually plenty of available drivers any time of day. We will not have shuttle buses for the welcome reception or the wedding, so please plan to either take a ride-share, drive or be driven.

Flight

Airports

The closest airport is San Luis Obispo (SLO). This small regional airport is right outside the town, about 10-15 minutes by car. If you are coming from a major airport, you can probably get there with just one layover. Los Angeles (LAX), San Francisco (SFO), San Jose, and Oakland airports are all about a 3-hour drive, give or take. From LA, the drive up to SLO is beautiful. After the first 45 minutes, you see mostly hills and ocean. You can even make a stop in Santa Barbara without going out of your way.

Train

Amtrak

It is possible to take the Amtrak Pacific Surfliner train from Los Angeles to San Luis Obispo, but it has its complications. You first need to take the FlyAway Bus from LAX to Union Station (average time 35 minutes, but God help you if try to make that trip anytime 4-7pm). The train trip from LA to SLO, as scheduled, is 5.5 hours. However, the Pacific Surfliner gets delayed at least 25% of the time, sometimes quite significantly, so you’d be rolling the dice.

Rental Car

Rental Cars & Driving

Avis, Hertz, Budget, and Enterprise all have locations in San Luis Obispo. If you want to set up a carpool from any of the airports, let us know and we'll try to make a connection.
