Things To Do

We're so excited to share a few of our favorite places in the area with you! There are so many outdoor activities in the surrounding Nantahala National Forest. The Highlands also has exquisite restaurants, fabulous shopping and a great cultural arts scene. The "postcard" downtown offers plenty of art galleries, antique stores and upscale boutiques. In the middle of downtown Highlands is Old Edwards Inn and Spa, a resort consisting of the historic main building, a full-service European–style spa, Madison’s Restaurant and Wine Garden.

Sunset Rock

Sunset Rock Trail is a 1.4 mile heavily trafficked out and back trail located near Highlands and is good for all skill levels.

Dry Falls

NC 28741

One of the most popular waterfalls in the area is Dry Falls at 0.2 miles. This 80-foot waterfall is located at the bottom of a paved trail that descends via stairs. The trail curves behind the waterfall, allowing you to stay dry while the water cascades over the overhanging bluff. There is also a viewing platform from the parking lot where the waterfall can be seen without going down the steps.

Glen Falls

Glen Falls is a spectacular set of waterfalls and is a must see. The picture on the home page is from here! There are actually 3 separate waterfalls to see here, but nothing on the information kiosk at the parking area tells you that. The hike to see the 3 waterfalls is about a mile (one way). Glen Falls is family friendly as long as you stay on the trails.
