It all started with a beer... Billy and his friend, Dustin, came into Nina's bar on a slow night. There was an instant attraction, and with a little help from Dustin, the night ended in a wedding proposal; a proposal to Nina to be Billy's date to Dustin's wedding. Life moved quickly after that. Nina met Billy's son, Jackson, and was immediately smitten with both boys. Then they received the news they were going to be having a baby boy of their own. Maverick was born the following Valentine's Day, and the rest is history. In January of 2019, they bought their first house together, a small farm on a few acres with all the animals Nina can sneak into the pasture without Billy noticing. One day, Nina pointed out that the couple's favorite holiday, the 4th of July, was going to be on a Saturday in 2020. That's all it took. Billy bought the ring, he planned the day, he had a mild anxiety attack that had him in the emergency room for eight hours, but he pushed through and he asked Nina to be his date to another wedding, their own.
With Billy helplessly locked in a car for the hour ride to Brown County the day of the proposal, Nina pestered him all morning about how she wanted to get married in 2020 and he needed to get to asking. Little did she know, he was awkwardly trying to hide the ring box buried in the side of the car door. They met their friends Nado and Molly at the stables where they were going to go horseback riding. Molly and Nina made a quick run to the restroom, and Billy pulled the ring out to show Nado what he had planned. When the girls got back, Nina was walking quickly over to the stables where a group was waiting for them to start the ride. Billy was shuffling his feet and in true Nina fashion, she was getting frustrated. "Oh my gosh, Nina. Come look at this." He was pointing into a little creek by a footbridge. Nina huffed under her breath something about what she was going to do to him if he didn't hurry up and come on. When he couldn’t convince Nina to come look at whatever he was pretending was there, he finally grabbed her arm, whipped her around and got down on one knee. Nina started gasping for breath from cracking up laughing, knowing she had been wrong for getting frustrated. Molly, who was just as surprised as Nina, snapped as many pictures as she could. Once she caught her breath, Nina responded, “Well duh.” The group waiting for them to join the ride started clapping and hollering for them. It was perfect. Nina could hardly contain her excitement on the trail ride. She sent out pictures of her holding the reins with a big rock on her finger to all her friends and family saying, "Does this horse make me look engaged?" to which everyone replied, "About time!" They spent the rest of the day enjoying wine and whiskey at the local distillery with their friends.
