Dylan and I met by happenstance in undergrad at OU when we both decided to take an honors organic chemistry II course against our better judgement. It wasn't in either of our plans to take the course (can you blame us?), but as luck would have it, we ended up being two of the 25 people in the class. Although we didn't know each other at the time, we happened to sit at the same table of four people on the first day of class, making up the Mighty DUKS - our table's group name for that semester. Throughout that semester, we grew close as friends by studying together in groups and going to trivia nights at O'Connell's on campus corner. Eventually, our friendship grew into something more, and we've been head over heels for each other ever since.
It was a normal Saturday morning that started off with brunch and mimosas, and I didn't suspect a thing all day. We spent the afternoon eating cupcakes and walking around shops, enjoying the sunshine. Dylan was adamant that we go eat at our special restaurant (Red Rock) that evening for no good reason, but I was really craving Raising Cane's. I eventually caved, and Dylan took us out to Lake Hefner for dinner with a stop by the lighthouse on the way. He timed it perfectly at sunset, and when I turned around to look at him, he was down on one knee. When he asked me to spend forever with him, I said 'Yes!' but poor Dylan was so nervous, he didn't hear my answer and asked in a panic a minute later what my answer was. Of course I want to be your girl forever, Dylan! Now let's go to Carmel and make it official!
The only thing that went right was that Shelby said “yes.” Countless date changes, important pieces of the puzzle going missing, and Shelby trying to go to a fast food chicken restaurant for “date night” are only a few of the minor setbacks that popped up for this special evening. I missed my mark for the photographers, the sun wasn’t where I wanted it, and we were both too excited and/or stressed to even eat our dinner afterwards, but at the end of the day, she said yes. Twice. Because I was too nervous about dropping the ring in the lake, among other things, and I didn’t hear her say it the first time. Thank you for saying yes through my unorganized chaos and for knowing when to put on your “cute top.” I love you, Shelby Laine!
