Dorothy met Theo in 2013 at UCLA, where they both attended the same fellowship (AACF) and church (CCAC). He was really tall, and she was scared of every tall male in AACF (e.g. Theo). Around fall quarter finals week, Theo (then a junior) posted on the AACF Facebook page that he could drive people up to the Bay Area after finals. Dorothy (then a freshman), wanting to save on flight tickets, took the offer and ended up as his only passenger. Much to their surprise, they were able to talk continuously throughout the entire five-hour drive. Fast forward to February 2017. Dorothy was a senior at UCLA expecting to begin optometry school at UC Berkeley in the fall. By now, her friendship with Theo had reached a comfortable point and they were talking regularly. One Sunday, Theo approached Dorothy at a church luncheon and asked “to talk in person.” Dorothy agreed, but internally braced herself to be rebuked (or at best, to be asked to do something for the college ministry’s upcoming retreat). When they met to talk, Theo nervously but concisely informed Dorothy of his feelings and asked her to go on a date. After a few days of prayer and seeking counsel, Dorothy decided to agree with Theo’s request. And after three dates, she officially said yes to beginning a relationship with Theo on April 1, 2017 (ha ha!). Since then, they’ve enjoyed good food and drink together, spent many Southwest points to visit one another, and supported one another with gospel truths through the difficult times of being apart and in school (seminary for Theo, and optometry school for Dorothy). On March 9, 2018, Theo surprised Dorothy with an engagement ring at Devout Coffee in Fremont. The sequence of events leading up to the proposal left Dorothy quite shocked and confused, but she (happily) said yes! Thank you to all who have walked with and prayed for us. God is so gracious to undeserving sinners like us. We hope that you will come celebrate with us and give thanks to Him on January 5, 2019!
