Question

Okay, I want to come! What should I do first?

Answer

RSVP for the wedding events, and book your flight to Kolkata. Wedding dates are Jan 3 to Jan 7, 2023.

Question

When should I RSVP by?

Answer

As soon as you can, but we request you to do it no later than August 1, 2022.

Question

Do you have a wedding registry?

Answer

Your presence is the biggest gift we could ask for. So please come with just your lovely selves, no gifts needed!

Question

Where should I stay in Kolkata?

Answer

We recommend booking a hotel or AirBnB near Park Street. The Park Hotel is a great choice which is very close to the reception venue. Other hotels we like are Kolkata's heritage hotels such as The Oberoi Grand in Chowringhee, The Astor in the Park Street area, Taj Bengal in Alipore, and The Lalit Great Eastern in Dalhousie. We strongly recommend booking your stay asap because there is a shortage of hotels due a conference that is being held in Kolkata at the same time as the wedding.

Question

How do I get around in Kolkata?

Answer

We recommend using the Uber app to get around Kolkata. If you use Uber in your home country, it should work just fine in India, as long as you have a data connection. For more on that, please see the FAQ on cell phones. Note: We're still planning transportation to and from the wedding events.

Question

Will my phone work in Kolkata?

Answer

It depends on your cell phone carrier. Some American carriers like T-Mobile provide free international roaming. Others like AT&T may require you to purchase an international plan. Getting a local sim card in India (with a data plan) is another option. You might be able to get one at the airport when you land, else visit a Airtel or Vodafone store near your hotel and ask for a prepaid sim card with a data plan. You will need a couple of copies of your passport and a couple of passport sized photographs.

Question

How should I pay for stuff in Kolkata?

Answer

We recommend withdrawing local cash (Indian rupees) from a bank ATM using your bank's debit card. Credit cards are great when they work, but we've had issues with them in the past, so having a cash alternative is important.

Question

Where can I buy Indian clothes?

Answer

Fab India is our all-time favorite go-to store for any Indian occasion, for both men and women, and it has locations all across the city. For sarees, in addition to Fab India, we also love Biswa Bangla and Byloom. Note that if you are buying a saree, you will also need to buy a matching blouse and a petticoat. The Dakshinapan shopping complex near Dhakuria is your best bet to buy the blouse and petticoat after you buy the saree.
