Most likely in walking distance from your hotel, you’ll find the cutest little downtown you ever did see. We recommend having a locally brewed beer and specialty pizza on the upstairs deck at High Alpine Brewing, brunching at The Dive, trying the world famous fresh lime juice margarita at Anejo’s, or really step out of your comfort zone with our absolute favorite authentic Nepalese/Indian/Tibetan restaurant - the Sherpa Cafe!
Check out Colorado’s largest lake! Depending on the weather you might be able to bring a towel and a cold beverage and catch some rays! You can rent a pontoon boat from the marina, or a paddle board from numerous shops in town. Even charter a fishing excursion through Gunnison Sports Outfitters! So much room for activities!!
The leaves should be starting to change and this scenic drive is hands down the best way to leaf peep. Head north from Gunnison on Colorado Highway 135 towards Crested Butte. Turn left onto Whiterock Ave in the town of Crested Butte. That road will quickly turn into County Road 12, Kebler Pass. Follow this for approximately 7 miles. (You can continue on County road 12 which will take you into the town of Paonia - and they have some killer wineries! You can either double back or continue from Paonia back to Gunnison on a VERY scenic yet beautiful loop) After those 7 miles on County Road 12, turn left onto County road 730, Ohio Creek Rd and follow that for approximately 23 miles back to Gunnison.
This national treasure will make the trip worth your while. Basically imagine if the Grand Canyon and heaven had a baby, it would be this place. The South Rim Visitors Center is the most easily accessible from the highway. It is a National Park so there is a vehicle fee to enter (I believe 30/car for the whole day). For the ultra adventurous, you can book a multi-day guided rafting trip for a small fortune $$$ Otherwise, bring your selfie stick and enjoy the views!
Adorable shopping and restaurants galore! Crested Butte is a super pretty mountain town only approximately 30 minutes north of Gunnison. Tons of hiking trails at your disposal. There’s a free bus that travels between the two to make commuting simple, especially after partaking in some local libations.
