Flight

Flying

Out of the three airport options in Maine, Portland International Jetport (PWM) is the easiest and, usually, cheapest. Flights from airlines like United and American Airlines fly out of Portland, regularly servicing direct flights from many U.S. cities. It is about 1:45 to 2 hours to drive from Portland to Weld and nearby towns. The alternative airports are Augusta State Airport (AUG) and Bangor International Airport (BGR). Augusta is the closest airport to us as it is only a 1-hour drive from there to Weld. The flight (on a 10-seater) is quite an experience. The airport services Cape Air's puddle jumper Cessna and it is a commuter plane from Boston. It is a beautiful 1-hour ride especially on a clear day but can be a bit bumpy if there is turbulence. Bangor International Airport is a 2-hour drive from there to Weld and is similar in size to Portland airport. You can also choose to fly into Boston and then drive to Weld (3.5 hours).

Travel Note

Book Lodgings Early!

Maine is a major tourist attraction state, especially in the Summer. Since most of the lodgings around the area are small B&B's, reservations tend to fill up quickly. We've been advised by the locals to book your lodgings by April to guarantee a room! So book soon! Scroll down for more lodging suggestions. Please let us know if you need any help.

Rental Car

Driving

For those of you considering renting a car to get around in Maine, the major car rental companies are available at all three airports, Portland, Bangor, and Augusta. Lyft (and maybe Uber) also works from Portland, Bangor, and Augusta to Weld. There are also taxi companies in the area that will do the drive too (but probably need to be prearranged).

House Or Rental

Lodgings

There are a number of B&B's and small hotels in the area to stay at. Many people also list their houses for rent on AirBnB and VRBO during the Summer months.
