We're getting married!

Diego y Steven se conocieron en el Club de Lectura de Artículos Científicos de Biofísica del Instituto Politécnico de Worcester (WPI) mientras trabajaban en sus doctorados. Diego asistía al club, mientras que Steven era uno de los ayudantes de cátedra. (¿Por qué un club de lectura necesita ayudantes de cátedra? ¡Esa es una muy buena pregunta!) No hablaron mucho mientras participaron en el Club, pero algunos meses después se reencontraron y rápidamente se volvieron inseparables, unidos por su amor compartido por la literatura ("¿También has leído House of Leaves por Danielewski? ¿Y Borges?"), la ciencia, los juegos de mesa y Calabozos y Dragones (Dungeons & Dragons). Después de meses de pasar más tiempo juntos que separados—lo que significaba que Steven tenía que transportar su piano digital de ida y vuelta al apartamento de Diego todas las semanas—decidieron que sería más sencillo si se mudaban juntos oficialmente; ellos básicamente ya estaban viviendo juntos. Esto sucedió justo antes de la pandemia y ninguno de ellos tenían idea de lo que aguardaba el futuro... Por suerte, la convivencia resultó ser perfecta para ambos: pasaron la mayor parte de la pandemia cocinando juntos; trabajando en sus doctorados; dando largos paseos; y jugando Pokémon Go y Gloomhaven, un juego de mesa que Steven le compró a Diego la Navidad anterior y que les llevó 400 horas completar... ("Nunca tendremos el tiempo para necesario para jugar Gloomhaven", ambos se habían lamentado inicialmente...). En diciembre de 2020, Steven y Diego obtuvieron sus doctorados y se mudaron a Boston para comenzar sus nuevas posiciones de postdoctorado en la Escuela de Medicina de Harvard (en MGH y BIDMC). Diego y Steven se enamoraron de la ciudad rápidamente y pasaron mucho tiempo visitando museos, cenando en distintos restaurantes y caminando por la Explanada del Río Charles. Juntos, ellos también exploraron nuevos lugares durante sus vacaciones. En otoño de 2021, ambos visitaron el Parque Nacional de Yellowstone y, al año siguiente, visitaron Perú. Diego llevó a Steven a un recorrido relámpago por Arequipa, donde Steven conoció a la familia de Diego por primera vez. Ellos también visitaron Cusco, el Valle Sagrado y el Valle del Colca. Diego le propuso matrimonio a Steven el 19 de marzo de 2023 en Contessa, uno de sus restaurantes favoritos en Boston con vistas al Public Garden. ¡Steven, por supuesto, dijo que sí! En la primavera de 2024 ambos regresaron a Perú, esta vez pasando más tiempo en Arequipa y poniéndose al día con los amigos y la familia de Diego. Y a finales del verano, ellos viajero al Reino Unido, considerando ese viaje una luna de miel previa a la boda. Poco después, comenzaron a planificar su boda, ¡y es así que llegamos al día de hoy!

Diego and Steven met in biophysics journal club at Worcester Polytechnic Institute while they were working on their PhDs. Diego was attending the club, and Steven was one of the teaching assistants. (Why a journal club needed any TAs is a very good question!) They didn't talk much during journal club, but reconnected some months later and quickly became inseparable, bonding over their shared love of literature ("You've read House of Leaves too? And Borges?!"), science, board games, and Dungeons & Dragons. After months of spending more time together than apart, and of Steven lugging his digital piano to and from Diego's apartment every week, they decided it would be simpler if they officially moved in together—they were basically 99% of the way there already, anyway. This was right before the pandemic, so they had no idea just how much time they would soon be spending together. Luckily, living together proved to be a joy for both of them. They spent most of the pandemic cooking together, working on their theses, taking long walks, and playing Pokémon Go. (And playing Gloomhaven, a board game Steven bought for Diego the previous Christmas that took them 400 hours to complete. "We'll never have time to play it, though," they had lamented...) They defended their theses and moved to Boston to start their new postdocs in December 2020. Diego and Steven fell in love with the city, and spent a lot of time visiting the various museums, trying new restaurants, and walking along the Esplanade. They also went on vacations to explore new places together. In fall of 2021, they visited Yellowstone National Park, and the following year they visited Peru. Diego took Steven on a whirlwind tour of Arequipa, Cusco, and the Sacred Valley, and Steven met Diego's family for the first time. Diego proposed to Steven on March 19th, 2023 at Contessa, one of their favorite restaurants in Boston overlooking the Public Garden. Steven, of course, said yes! In spring of 2024 they visited Peru again, this time spending more time around Arequipa and catching up with Diego's friends and family. They also traveled to London in late summer, considering it a pre-wedding honeymoon. Shortly after, they started planning for their wedding, and here we are!
