We met through mutual friends while Matt, or Didway as he is better known, was attending college in Lubbock, Texas all the way back in 2011. Matt lived with his two best friends, Scott and Joe. Their house became known as "JSM" by just about anyone who was around our age and liked to have a good time. Our friends group would meet up before and after going to our favorite live music venue, The Blue Light Live. Our friendship continued to last for several years. Every time Jana would visit Lubbock, we would always end up at Blue Light for whatever band was playing that night and that's where it all started. A couple years later, Matt moved to Midland, where Jana was currently living, to begin his career. Our friendship continued to grow and we became the best of friends. I don't know that either of us actually ever intended on starting a relationship with each other, but one day we decided to give it a try.
After about a year and a half of dating, Matt finally popped the question. As a Christmas gift, he bought a trip to Las Vegas for them to see George Strait. Jana knew that's when it was going to happen. That was not the case. We were visiting Matt's family in Marble Falls a couple weeks after Christmas. We had spent all day at his Grandparents, DB & Suzy, ranch outside of town, riding dirt bikes, checking on the progress of the new house they were building, and shooting Matt's new gun. Robbye, Matt's Mother, had told us that they had a friends birthday party they needed to stop at prior to the already planned late-birthday dinner for Matt's brother, Taylor. They asked if they could take Devin with them to the party and meet us at dinner later that evening. Devin is seriously obsessed with Matt's youngest brother, Parker, so there was no stopping him from going anywhere Parker was going. We got ready and were headed out when Robbye called and said that they had left a cell phone at DB's. It wasn't far from where we were headed so we agreed to go by and pick it up. A couple minutes after Matt had got out of the truck, Devin walks up to get Jana. Questioning why Devin was at DB's and not at the birthday party, he just told her "I don't know Mom, just come on!" We walked around the corner of the barn and there it was. All of our parents, Matt's Aunts and Cousins, and his Grandparents. Robbye and Kati, Jana's Mother, had been planning this whole surprise all week long. There was no birthday party, there was no birthday dinner for Taylor, his Dad wasn't at a skeet shoot all weekend. They were all there for us and to celebrate our engagement. Surprising Jana is not an easy task, but somehow they managed to pull it all off.
