Ahora me sorprende no haberme dado cuenta de que los dos chicos se habían mudado a la habitación de al lado. Esa noche la universidad celebraba un evento de bienvenida en el gimnasio. De camino hacia allá, reconocí a un grupo de chicos de la reunión de todo el dormitorio que caminaban a mi lado. POINT OF VIEW: Alex Twas three days before class, when ASU hosted meet-and-greets. All the freshman socialized, even the nerds. Let me start over... Finally, the parents had left. You've successfully unpacked your side of the dorm. Well...maybe just organized a few things and you can finish later. Okay FINE! Nothing's unpacked, there's boxes everywhere, and the A/C always blasts -1000 degrees but you're STOKED because you finally have free will and the university is hosting freshman social events all week. It's time to mingle. You grab your roomie and your newly acquainted suitemate and head off to the Rock The 'Rec - the biggest freshman social event on campus. 100 feet before the entrance, you turn to your left and see a girl. She's all alone. "You should say hi," you think to yourself. "Who knows, she could be cool." Plot twist: you do not say hi and keep walking with your bros. Suddenly, "Hi! My name's Diane! Are you guys headed to the rec center?" Thank god she had more social grace than me. "Hey! I'm Alex and this is Matthew, my roommate, and Christian, my suitemate. We're headed there now." "I'll join you then! Where are you guys from? What are your majors?" She was so much fun to be around, we didn't make any more friends that night. The four of us chatted the rest of the night, wandering around campus. 2 days later, Diane and I bought tickets to our first concert 1 year later, we started dating 10 concerts, 4 countries, 3 cats and a whole lot of date nights later... We're still madly in love - POINT OF VIEW: Diane I stood in the middle of my dorm room absorbing the noise of excited energy permeating the halls. Half of a plain gray room was my new life and I couldn’t be happier, without a clue of what I would find. I spent the entire afternoon unpacking with my door open and my speaker turned up. People would pop their heads in now and then to complement my music. It surprises me now that I never noticed the two boys move in next door. That evening the university was holding a welcome event in the gym. On my way there, I recognized a group of boys from the floor meeting walking beside me. I knew this was my chance to start making friends, “Hi! My name's Diane! Are you guys headed to the rec center?" From this moment on, we were never apart. At the end of the night, I noticed Matthew and Alex were following me to my room. I was about to question them when my confusion turned into sheer joy. They continued past my room to the room next to mine – turns out we shared a wall. After we said our goodnights, I turned on some music to tackle my chaotic unpacked jungle of a room. In a few minutes, Alex would knock on my door and ask if he could keep me company because he liked my music. 2 days later, we bought tickets to our first concert. 1 year later, he knelt down on one knee and asked me to be his girlfriend with a ring pop. 4.5 years later, he asked me to be his wife (in Spanish and also with a ring pop). En enero de 2023, la Isla del Encanto nos regaló un recuerdo irrepetible. Después de 4,5 años juntos, Diane sospechaba que Alex le iba a pedir matrimonio durante el próximo viaje a Cartagena. Alex es muy malo guardándole secretos, así que pensó que ella sabría cuándo él quería proponerle matrimonio. Tenía razón. Alex pidió el consentimiento de su padre antes del viaje. We love to visit Barú when we return to Cartagena. Our favorite hotel is Isla del Encanto. We have fond memories there: Diane scuba dived for the first time, we swam with bioluminescent plankton and we shared many oceanside, romantic Caribbean dinners. In January 2023, la Isla del Encanto gave us a once-in-a-lifetime memory. After 4.5 years together, Diane suspected Alex might propose during their upcoming trip to Cartagena. Alex is notoriously awful at keeping secrets from her so she figured that she would know when he wanted to pop the question. She was right. Alex had already asked her father for her hand in marriage before they left. With approval from Dale, Alex crafted the most romantic proposal in Spanish that would combine everything Diane loved - the ocean, Colombia, wine, Alex - and a personal touch to make it unique - sticky notes and ring pops. Only this time, Alex was determined to keep it a secret. The only problem: Diane was with Alex every single second from the airport to living in the same house in Cartagena. He could not sneak anything past her. Alex needed help. Luckily, Alex's mom was on her way to meet the family for the first time. She could bring everything he needed without Diane getting suspicious. When Mom, Alex and Diane arrived at the island, Mom proposed the idea of a massage to Diane. This was a devious plot between Alex and Mom to get Diane out of the room so Alex could prep. With Diane's unknowing agreement, Mom and Diane scheduled massages the next day. Alex had his window to prepare the perfect proposal. After the girls left for massages, Alex got to work. He plastered the walls with 1,678 individual sticky notes that contained the story of their love - the exact number of days they've dated. Since Alex asked Diane to be his girlfriend with a ring pop, Alex made a big heart of ring pops on the bed, saving one for the real deal. With rose petals decorating the empty space and red wine on ice, Alex turned an island hotel room into a celebration of 4.5 years of love. Hearing Diane's footsteps come up the stairs, he took a breath and opened the door. She was astonished! It didn't occur to her what was unfolding until Alex got down on one knee. She listened to his romantic words while he clutched his Spanish-translated notecard. Her response: "Por su puesto, amor"
