How We Met

5/17/2015

Embracing the generation we were born into, we met swiping through the dating app Hinge. After a few days of witty banter back and forth, and agreeing that the other person must be somewhat normal we agreed to have our first date at Parish Cafe in Boston. We'd agreed to meet for drinks. Cal put on his most "effortlessly cool" outfit (a white shirt and blue jeans), popped in a piece of minty fresh gum and he headed out to walk to meet Devon. Before entering Parish, he realized that he was still chewing gum and needed to dispose of it. As he neared the closest trash can, a practical joker bird took this opportunity to see if Cal could win Devon over using only his personality because from this point forward, he would be donning an avian-feces-embellished shirt. Now only 2 minutes before the start of the date, he had to make a game time decision. Does he run into the nearest J-Crew and buy a new shirt or wipe off the remains and just roll with it? As being late makes him more anxious than anything, he chose the latter. Devon arrived a few minutes later. The date began as most do, discussing similar interests and the weather. We laughed and shared stories of friends, family and our favorite running playlists. Devon asked Cal if there was a song that would be the soundtrack to his life, what song would it be? He wasn't sure - there were so many options! When it came time for the night to wind down, Cal leaned in for a hug and said to Devon "we should do this again!" Being somewhat hard of hearing, Devon never heard this and just blurted out, "well... bye!" before turning away and disappearing to take the T home. As we parted ways, Cal was so confused. Hadn't things gone well? Why didn't Devon say "that sounds great!" instead? Going to sleep feeling slightly defeated, he hadn't given up completely. The next day, he came up with a witty answer to her life-soundtrack question and texted her. We don't remember the song; it was just an excuse to talk to her, after all...
