How We Met

We met at Chico State University, where we both worked as RAs (Resident Advisors) in the dorms. We were placed on the same duty team, which meant spending Thursday nights walking the community together while talking, laughing, and slowly getting to know one another. From the very beginning, Natalie had a quiet crush on Sam and a gut feeling that their paths were meant to intertwine. Over time, their friendship grew through long conversations, shared humor, and countless nerdy math discussions while doing homework. Eventually, Sam asked Natalie out on a Valentine’s Day date. That evening, they walked to one of Natalie’s favorite spots in Chico, the Star Liquor taco truck. Sam arrived with “flowers,” which turned out to be a bag of all purpose baking flour with an “s” added in sharpie. Not wanting the night to end, Natalie suggested watching a movie. Sam agreed, and Natalie chose the longest one she owned: Titanic. A week later, they were officially dating. Because Natalie had kept her feelings a secret for months out of fear of jinxing it, her friends were genuinely surprised when she announced she had a boyfriend and they all asked, "who?" Sam first met Natalie’s parents, Steve and Ellie, in passing while they were visiting Chico, months before Sam and Natalie ever began dating. Sam complimented them on raising such a wonderful daughter, to which Ellie smirked and replied, “You’re such a schmoozer…” Natalie met Sam’s parents, Jeff and Cyndi, during a weekend visit to their home. Determined to make a good impression, Natalie settled onto the couch with a bowl of poached pears in red wine dessert sauce, only to spill it all over the brand-new white fluffy blanket Cyndi had recently bought. From Thursday-night walks to shared laughter, small moments, and unforgettable first impressions, what began as a friendship grew into a love that has now spanned a decade. And now, after ten years together, we get to celebrate the next chapter surrounded by the people who have loved and supported us along the way. Here’s to the first ten years, and a lifetime still to come.
