A hidden gem! Hop on a train from Florence to Montepulciano Stanzione and call a taxi to take you up into town. A true Renaissance hill town with exceptional history and culture - be aware the entire city is built into a mountain (lots of walking, we recommend good fitting sneakers). Try to find a restaurant along the rim of the city for scenic overlooks, but you won't find bad food or wine regardless of where you go. We suggest taking a day trip to see beautiful Montepulciano!
We spent over a week in Florence, and it wasn't nearly enough! Some of our favorite things we did: -Ponte Vecchio (arts/jewelry market bridge) -Piazzale Michelangelo (BEST sunset view of the city- can get crowded but for good reason) -365 Florence Rooftop cooking class (arguably our favorite thing we did- worth the ticket price book in advance) -Mercato del Porcellino (leather markets) -Wine windows (all over the city) -Hiking up the Duomo (must get tickets in advance and wear comfortable walking shoes) -Kebab shops (also all over the city- an absolute must) -La Galleria dell'Accademia di Firenze (the David statue is here- must get tickets in advance) -Uffizi Gallery (tickets in advance)
We visited Siena twice during our Italian trip in 2024- once on our own and the second time with a tour group. We went off on our own adventure through the city the second time around and stumbled on one of the district contrades named the Owls. Just off Piazze del Campo (main city square featured in James Bond) visit the museum of the Owl district. We were welcomed into a beautifully done museum and personally escorted through the district's history. It was certainly one of our favorite memories during our time in Italy, and our tour guide's passion made it very personal. Historically, Siena rivaled its neighbor, Florence, and therefore boasts its own Duomo di Siena. It is a marvelous work of architecture and remains an active cathedral. Highly recommend getting tickets for any trip to Siena!
Cinque Terre should certainly be a bucket-list item if it's not already! Five beautiful coastal villages arrayed along Italy's western coast, this is a hiker's dream. If you're not game for beating your step goals, they have plentiful buses and ferries running between the towns. Several tour companies offer daily trips from Florence or Milan, but with some help from Google Maps, a self-guided tour is easily done as well.
