Luca and Deena met back in 2016 – Deena was a freshman in college and Luca was a sophomore. Deena first saw him while she was eating her lunch at Chipotle on the university campus. Although they were a few tables away, they couldn’t stop nervously looking over in the other’s direction. Luca was eating lunch with his friends, but stood up to walk past her. With a big smile on his face, he said “hello,” but then nervously turned back around and walked back to his table. He grabbed his skateboard and rode away, but that didn’t stop them from exchanging flirty stares and smiles. Watching him leave was a feeling Deena had never experienced before – she felt so sad knowing that she'd never see him again. For weeks, Deena would walk around campus secretly hoping that she'd find this boy and that their paths would cross again, but they did not. It wasn’t until she came across the team’s roster, where she found his name, and added him as a friend on Facebook. Meanwhile, Luca was at a tennis tournament in Malibu when he got her friend request. He excitedly began showing her profile picture to his teammates and within an hour, he messaged Deena on Facebook. Which is a miracle in itself since he had never messaged a girl on social media. Their first date was at Fashion Island in Newport Beach, where they talked for more than 6 hours. Deena's fingers and toes tingled the entire time out of nervousness. That night, Deena called her family and told them that this would be the man she would marry one day. At the time, they questioned her sanity, but here they are, almost 6 years later, engaged, and ready to start their lives together.
Throughout the past few years, Luca and Deena often times talked about their future – getting married, owning a house, and having kids. After spending a few months in quarantine, Luca knew that Deena was the one he wanted to spend the rest of his life with. Luca wanted to make the proposal perfect, so he reached out to Deena's family and friends for some help. Since Deena is very intuitive and catches onto clues quickly, he committed to hiding all his text and email messages from her. This posed a challenge since they are ALWAYS on each other’s phones. Luca custom ordered the engagement ring with Deena's dad, who effortlessly gave Luca his blessing. On August 7, 2020, Luca called Deena at work and asked if she wanted to join him for a picnic at their favorite spot in Newport Beach. When they arrived, they walked along the water and watched the waves crash. He stopped her at 42nd Street, a very special place in their hearts. It was the spot they always spent time at as college students and more importantly, Luca’s favorite surf spot! In fact, earlier that morning, while Luca was surfing, he looked out to the sand and thought, “This is the exact spot where I will make Deena my fiancé.” He then got down on one knee and asked Deena to marry him. At that moment, they looked up to see all of their friends and family running towards them. Luca had organized a beautiful arrangement by the Picnic Collective and surprised her with a house on the beach for the weekend!
