Before their final year of college, Scott and Debika flew across the country from Pennsylvania and Atlanta to attend a summer research program in Davis, California. Their first conversation was about food (surprise). Specifically, Debika was astonished by the amount of milk that Scott was drinking in the dining commons (in Scott's defense, California milk is delicious). They quickly became close friends who would stay up by the pool swapping stories, not realizing how late it was until the sun came up. They'd work on projects together, eat meals together, share late-night snacks from Trader Joe's (typically dumplings), and study for the GRE together by the pool. Being oblivious engineers, it took them almost the entire summer to realize that they were, in fact, quite in love with each other. Fast forward seven years, through one year spent apart, 5 years of graduate school together in Davis, and another year transitioning to the real world (at least for Debika) and moving to Emeryville. Scott took Debika to Angel Island for their seventh anniversary. After getting off the ferry, they took a walk along the rocky Tiburon waterfront. Near the spot where they first said "I love you," Scott pulled out a ring and got down on one knee. He then proceeded to put the ring on the wrong hand. Fortunately for him, Debika said yes anyway.
