Our favorite bar in KC - a small and quaint French champagne bar, located in the Westport neighborhood.
KC's only hockey bar! A frequent spot for us to watch Capitals' games during the Stanley Cup Playoffs. It's a hockey-lovers dream come true.
America's official World War I museum and memorial. Home to the most comprehensive collection of WWI objects in the world. If you visit, be sure to also get tickets to go the top of the Liberty Memorial, which has the absolute best sky view of Kansas City.
One of our favorite cocktail spots, just a few blocks from our wedding venue. If you have the time, we recommend taking their distillery tours for a neat glimpse into the politicized prohibition era in KC. http://www.toms-town.com/visit/tours
The best spot to catch live jazz, no cover charge! If the main floor looks packed, there is a downstairs section with live music as well.
Catching a game at beaufiul Kauffman Stadium is always a winning option. If you're in town after the wedding, the Cubs are playing the Royals August 6-8.
KC's hometown brewery. Check out a tour or hang out in their taproom. A few other local brews outside Boulevard include Stockyard Brewery, Torn Label Brewing, and KC Beir Co.
Although Jeff no longer eats meat outside of the occasional seafood, he still grew up on BBQ and this was his favorite growing up. It may be worth looking up the food options in advance, as the counter staff will most likely shout, “HI, MAY I HELP YOU!” before you even get a chance to read the menu. Burnt ends are a staple of Kansas City BBQ, but if you want more variety the Mixed Plate is a great order.
Known for its neoclassical architecture, extensive collection of Asian art, Third Thursday parties, and beautiful Nelson lawn with giant shuttlecocks sprinkled about, the Nelson Atkins Museum is definitely worth a trip. Admission is always free and it’s also our favorite picnic destination as it happens to just be down the street from our apartment.
The best BBQ in Kansas City is a heated debate. The most frequently mentioned to hold this title would be Gates BBQ, Arthur Bryant’s, or Jack Stack but the newest member to creep into this conversation would be Joe’s KC. But, if you check them out make sure you go to their original gas station location. They also have the best vegetarian BBQ sandwich in the region (Portobello Z-Man).
Our favorite spot for Italian food in Kansas City. Cupini's is a no frills restaurant with delicious Guy Fieri approved food. For a slightly more upscale and historic KC Italian restaurant, check out Garozzo’s Columbus Park location at 526 Harrison St.
The Roasterie is Kansas City’s most famous coffee brew and their location on 1204 W. 27th St. 1204 W offers a great tour of their factory. But, our favorite coffee shops would have to be Oddly Correct on 3940 Main Street and Thou Mayest on 419 East 18th St. Fair warning, Oddly Correct, a tad on the pretentious side, does not offer cream or sugar.
Kansas City’s nickname is the City of Fountains, as it’s said to have more running fountains than Rome, and The Plaza is where to find some of the most iconic. The Plaza is a famous shopping district known for its Spanish architecture and has a ton of restauraunt options.
To learn more about Kansas City’s neighborhoods and history, kcfuntours.com offers a 75 minute narrated trolley tour of the city. There’s also a different BBQ specific bus tour that includes tastings at kcbarbecuetours.com.
