The Story

Ben and Dawn met the new "old fashioned" way, using technology. Their use of the internet helped them broaden their search area beyond their geographical and personal circles, which was a good thing. Dawn was living in Cypress, and Ben in Kingwood. For those of you outside of Houston, there is 40 miles between the two locations. Dawn thought Ben was so adorable in his profile picture, and fortunately Ben thought the same about her, which led to him making the first move! The process of getting to know each other consisted of Ben choosing questions followed by Dawn's response and return of questions. After that, the door opened to beginning a virtual conversation. They had so much to talk about, and decided to move to the inevitability of giving each other their phone numbers. The slower process of question and answer help the two build a foundation of communication. Dawn learned of Ben's three children, and Ben learned about Dawn's jeep. There was a mutual connection in that Dawn worked with kids and Ben worked on a 1996 Land Rover in his spare time. The couple found an affinity for watching Marvel Superhero shows on Netflix and wanted to move to the next step...a real date. For their first date, Ben surprised Dawn by getting a reservation to THE restaurant in Houston she had been dying to go, the Rainbow Lodge. The catch, Dawn never told him. Ben just said he had an idea of a place he thought Dawn would like, and he was right! Looking back, Ben just has an ability to read Dawn's mind and know what she wants before she does. When he brought a box of Macaroni and Cheese instead of flowers, Dawn knew he was special. Hurricane Harvey changed many lives in 2017, and especially Dawn and Ben's. Dawn officially moved in with Ben and the kids after losing her apartment and all her belongings. With all the turmoil in South Texas, #teamharrell turned a negative into a positive and moved forward to build a family.

The Proposal

Ben proposed with almost all of their immediate family in attendance. They were camping at the Lonestar Jellystone Park where Dawn's parents came to spend the week. On Saturday night, Ben's oldest son, Ashton said, "Dawn, Daddy wants a picture of you two by the fire." Although Dawn was used to such requests, as she walked to the fire pit she noticed there was only one chair. It was 9:41 pm, because Ben's sister in law, Stephanie, left her phone on the chair. As Dawn contemplated how this photo near the fire was going to look, she turned around to see everyone they both cared about standing, and staring, with their cell phones pointed towards she and Ben. Dawn's immediate thought? "Well, here we go!" as she looked to see Ben taking a knee, asking, "Will you marry me?" Earlier in the day, Dawn's dad asked her if a small piece of hardware he had in his pocket fit her finger. That piece of hardware turned out to be the ring Ben attempted put on Dawn's left hand. It didn't fit...Happily, the ring does fit now, and Dawn is happy to show it off and tell the story to anyone who has a spare moment.
