Question

About Red Tail Ranch - Formally Know as Whatley Ranch

Answer

Barney Lee Whatley was born in October 1885 in Alabama. After contracting tuberculosis, he moved to Colorado seeking cleaner air. He arrived in Breckenridge in 1912 to serve as town and county attorney for Breckenridge and Summit County. There, he built connections with railroads and mining interests, eventually representing the block of claims that became the Climax Molybdenum Mine. Barney’s entire family later moved to Summit County, including his sister, brother, mother, and Civil War–veteran father. The Whatleys received three homestead patents within a year, combining them into a family ranch. Each plot required improvements such as building a house, farming, and other enhancements. The ranch served as a family residence rather than a working ranch. Barney was a skilled gardener, selling strawberries and rhubarb locally, while the family raised hay, vegetables, milk cows, hogs, and chickens for personal use. In 1920, the family moved to Denver due to Barney’s growing law practice but maintained the Breckenridge ranch as a seasonal home. During this period, Summit County was transitioning from a mining economy to one focused on agriculture and tourism. The Whatleys spent summers there when courts and schools were closed, enjoying mountain life. Though not an economic hub, the ranch reflects the rise of tourism in the area and the family’s long-standing connection to Summit County. In 2005, the Bolthouse family purchased the ranch, continuing its legacy and stewardship in the region.

Question

About the Artist - April Andrescavage

Answer

I am a watercolor artist who re-discovered painting after moving to Colorado in 2013. Surrounded by the vast beauty of the mountains, I felt drawn to capture the landscapes and details of nature that inspire me. Watercolor quickly became my medium of choice—not only for its luminous qualities, but for its unpredictability. I love that the paint and water often move in their own way, creating effects beyond my control. This lack of certainty feels magical, reminding me that the creative process is as much about surrender as it is about intention. When I paint, I slow down and look deeply at my subject. Each brushstroke becomes a form of meditation, helping me connect more fully to the mountains, the trees, and the natural world around me. Over time, this practice has turned the landscapes I observe into memories I carry within myself—art not only as a reflection of nature, but as a part of who I am. Most recently, I had the joy of painting both the save the dates and the wedding invitations for Davis and Zach. To see more of my work, visit me on Instagram at @april.in.watercolor.

Question

What is the Dress Code?

Answer

Elevated Western/Cocktail Think classic Western charm or polished cocktail style—it’s your choice! The wedding will be at a working ranch, so starched jeans, crisp button-ups, and cowboy boots are just as welcome as cocktail dresses, suits, and heels (keep in mind the wedding will be held in a grass field, so lean into those chunky heals!) Ladies, whether you choose a flowy skirt with boots or a chic cocktail dress, you’ll fit right in. Gents, rock those jeans and a cowboy shirt or dress it up with slacks and a sport coat. Cowboy hats encouraged, sparkle and fringe embraced, and a little sass always welcome. We’ll have a live Western band, so come ready to look sharp, feel comfortable, and dance the night away!
