How We Met

A Business School Mentorship

David and Susannah attended the University of Wisconsin MBA program in the Fall of 2017. As a 1st year MBA student, Susannah was appointed a 2nd year mentor to guide her through the craziness of starting business school. Fortunately for Susannah, David had a lot to offer her. After trading a few introductory e-mails over the summer, David and Susannah met in person in a tiny "breakout" room in Grainger Hall. David thought Susannah was aloof. Susannah thought David was cute. She texted her friends after, "Bad news. I'm in love with my mentor." One fateful night, after a monkey-themed apartment party, David professed his like. Susannah said, "I can't date my mentor. I'm here to learn." David said, "I will wait until you graduate then." Three days later they went on a date. For the next 4 months they attempted to keep it a secret from the rest of their classmates. The secret was, everyone knew. Their forbidden romance continued on through David's graduation and 1st year of work, as well as Susannah's internship and last year of school. They now reside in Chicago and work two cubicles away from each other at PepsiCo.

The Proposal

Two Cliff Dwellers

The admissions office at the University of Wisconsin reached out to Susannah to meet with a prospective MBA candidate: William L. Jackson. As Susannah had met with potential students before, she thought nothing of the request and accepted. William reached out via e-mail to request a meeting at the Cliff Dweller's Club on Michigan Ave overlooking Millennium Park from the 22nd floor. In his correspondence, he misspelled Susannah's name several times (a fact that she complained about to many friends and former classmates). Upon arriving, Susannah found the club was completely empty except for a janitor sweeping the floor. She was immediately flustered and thought "I should not be here. It's closed!" After wandering around aimlessly, Susannah was met by a hostess who said, "You're here for William? Right this way." The hostess led Susannah outside to a breathtaking view of Millennium Park (and Lollapalooza). On the rooftop, she found David, wearing his best suit (and his friend Greg holding a camera). David got down on one knee and Susannah said, "YES!"
