Just outside Helena is the gates of the mountains boat tour. This takes you on a part of the journey made by Lewis and Clark down the Missouri River. Lewis wrote about it in his journals as the “Gates of the Mountains” because “at each bend in the waterway, great stone walls seemed to block passage, only to open like gentle giant gates as the expedition drew near”. It’s a great piece of history to experience.
The tour train is one of the best and most fun ways to get a tour of all of Helena’s historic places. It runs Monday through Saturday and you’ll get the chance to learn all about Helena’s History in an open air tour train.See the opulent mansion district, marvel at the Cathedral of St. Helena, and roll by our governor’s homes. Cruise by a restored miners’ village, enjoy the unique architecture along Last Chance Gulch, and catch a glimpse of the Old Fire Tower. It’s a fun way to see beautiful and historic Helena!

If your looking to get some exercise in with a view we highly recommend Mount Helena! There’s a parking lot at the base to park and a beautiful view of the whole valley from the top. It’s around a 2 hour hike and a popular trail full of friendly hikers. Be sure to wear your hiking boots and bring water. It’s uphill the whole way but worth it for the view from the top.
A great place if you’re hungry for a burrito. We used to stop at the Taco Del Sol in Missoula on our way home from college during breaks. The one in Helena is just as delicious!
