Hiking: Bolar Mountain boasts 11 miles of hiking trails that lead to two impressive scenic overlooks: Islands Overlook Spur and Grouse Point Overlook. Fishing: Be sure to have a VA Fishing Permit and review VA fishing laws. Lake Moomaw is home to brown trout, rainbow trout, brook trout, perch, catfish, sunfish, and more!
Route 39 towards Lexington along the Maury River Parking is along the roadside, during peak times (warm Summer weekends) it can be hard to find a safe spot so get there early. Most people park along the roadside but there are also a few small parking lots. Goshen Pass/Jump Rock Trail: This 9-mile loop hike features three different vistas with wonderful views that would each be worth hiking to on their own, and each view is in a different direction. For these reasons, Jump Rock is one of the best day hikes in central Virginia. Find a detailed trail guide on hikingupward.com as the directions and trail can be confusing at parts. Fishing: Be sure to have a VA Fishing Permit and review VA fishing laws. Expect to see rainbow and brook trout, smallmouth bass, and carp. Swimming: Hang out in the river then lay out on a rock to catch some rays.
There are two sections of the Jackson River, split by the placement of the Gathright Dam. The lower section of the Jackson is below the Dam and the upper section is above the Dam with the headwaters in Highland County. Access Points: Poor Farm, Muddy Run, Hidden Valley, Gathright Dam, Johnson Spring, Smith Bridge, Indian Draft, Petticoat Junction, Dry Run. Kayaking: For an ~3 hour float put in at Johnson Spring and get out at Smith Bridge. For ~6-7 hour float put in at Johnson Spring and get out at Petticoat Junction. Hiking: Jackson River Scenic Trail: A 14-mile gravel through trail that parallels the Jackson River. There are multiple entry and exit points to make the trail shorter if you’re not up for 14 miles. Trailheads include: Intervale, Petticoat Junction, Smith Bridge and Natural Well.
