About Tepoztlán

Tepoztlán is a "Pueblo Mágico," which translates to "Magical Town". It's a designation awarded by the Mexican government to smaller towns for their historical significance, unique traditions and natural wonders. According to myth, Tepoztlán is the birthplace of Ce Acatl - the origin of the feathered serpent god Quetzalcōātl, widely worshipped in ancient Mexico. To this day, there are a lot spiritual ties to the area with astrologists, shamans and wellness retreats in abundance! Tepoztlán is a popular weekend destination for the people near Mexico City to get away and relax - here are some of our favorite places to visit!

Archaeological Zone Tepozteco

Carretera Federal libre, Cuernavaca - Tepoztlan

Hike up the mountain to visit an Aztec temple built around 1200 C.E.! El Tepozteco is the archaeological site at the top of the local mountain. It consists of a small temple to Tepoztēcatl, the Aztec god of the alcoholic beverage pulque. It also offers amazing views over the surrounding area! About a 40-minute hike with a few breaks it's not too long, and mostly in the shade - but with a steep incline! Wear good comfortable shoes because the terrain has some slippery rocks. We recommend going earlier in the morning or in the afternoon to avoid the heat & crowds. Entry into the Archaeological Zone (Pyramid) is $55 pesos, cash only.

Mercado Municipal Tepoztlán

Arq. Pablo González 3, Santo Domingo, Tepoztlán

Excellent food hall with many little puestos (booths) to choose from, all with beautiful views over Tepoztlán. Fun fact: The item in my quesadilla is huitlacoche or corn fungus, it's earthy, a little sweet & delicious.

Las Calaquitas Mezcalería

2 Avenida Galeana, La Santísima, Tepoztlán

Try artisanal mezcal at one of our favorite Mezcalerías in Tepoztlán!

Museo Carlos Pellicer

Arq. Pablo González 2, Centro, Tepoztlán

The local archeology museum with interesting artifacts from the area! Admission is $15 pesos, payable in cash only.

La Cueva Tepoztlán

25 Revolución de 1910, San Jose, Tepoztlán

Fun plant filled bar with delicious cocktails & libations. The cocktail pictured here is our favorite - the Jamaicano, made with agua de jamaica (hibiscus flower tea).

For all the days along the way
