D&E: The Spark

Some love stories arrive like a lightning strike. Ours felt more like a spark that quietly decided to stay. We met in a small coffee shop in Paonia, Colorado, where Daniel walked in fresh off a mountain bike ride, a little too confident for his own good, and Eliya walked in with a presence that made everything feel a little more grounded. Daniel likes to say he had it all under control, right up until Eliya’s dance partner showed up and shifted the entire equation. And yet, somehow, Dan still got the date. Depending on who you ask, the beginning looks a little different. Eliya knew something was there the moment she got home that first night. Daniel was fairly certain he’d never hear from her again. Somewhere between those two versions is where our story really started. What followed wasn’t just a relationship, it was a building season. Together, we earned our undergraduate degrees, went on to complete our master’s programs, renovated a condo, worked full time, traveled as much as we could, and still managed to carve out time for a few unforgettable adventures along the way. It wasn’t always easy. Life moved fast, expectations were high, and there were moments that tested us in ways we didn’t expect. But through it all, we kept choosing each other. Not just in the big milestones, but in the quiet, everyday decisions to stay, to grow, and to figure it out side by side. Daniel brings a bold, all-in energy to life, the kind that says, “let’s go” before the map is fully drawn. Eliya brings a grounding force, the kind that makes people feel seen, supported, and steady even in the middle of change. One pushes forward, one roots deep, and somewhere in that rhythm, we found something that feels like home. At the center of it all is something simple and certain. We always come back to each other. Fully, honestly, and without hesitation. So this next chapter feels less like a beginning and more like a continuation. A little bit of “I do what I want,” a little bit of “Let’s run away to the woods,” and a whole lot of building a life that feels like ours.
