If you are traveling from the NY area, all direct flights (about 10 hours) travel out of JFK. We prefer to do a layover. If you can find a flight leaving the night prior to when you want to arrive on Maui, it is best to arrive on Maui early in the morning, so you don't feel as if you wasted an entire day on a plane (even though you will gain 6 hours if traveling from the east coast).

Condo vs. Hotels

If you are planning to stay in Kihei, there are not many hotels in the area other than in Wailea (very expensive at $550+/night). VRBO has been our go to when we look for a place to stay. We usually find out what Condo Association (ie. Hale Kai O'Kihei, Koa Lagoon, etc.) and book direct with the condo association to eliminate VRBO fees, etc. The best places to stay closest to the beach are nearest S. Kihei Road. There are many timeshares and houses in the area on the site for rent with a variety of pricing depending on what you are looking for (Beachfront, a block from the beach, etc.). We have stayed in other areas of the island, including Lahaina and Kapalua, but prefer Kihei. It's more relaxed, cheaper, drier, and everything (food stores, restaurants, shopping) are usually within walking distance or a very short drive. There are plenty of condos to choose from within your budget. Oceanfront will be at a premium, but a unit that is much cheaper may be worth it for a short walk to the beach, even if it's across the street. There are many car rental companies to choose from. Some are at the airport and some are off site, but will shuttle you to and from the airport. The most cost effective rental company we have found is Kihei Rent A Car (www.kiheirentacar.com). They provide a shuttle from the airport.
