On March 19, 2011, a couple of kids met at a battle of the bands. Dan was the lead singer and Rachael was in her groupie era; it was a perfect match. Dan's band won the battle that night, along with Rachael's heart. Since then, those two kids have gained a few wrinkles and lots of laugh lines from time well wasted together. After going as green as one can at Michigan State, the two headed home to Detroit Rock City. It wasn't considered much of a destination at the time, but they have a thing for the underrated. Living in midtown in the heart of the arts district, Rachael and Dan got to experience the city's resurgence first-hand. At that time, what is now the Shinola Hotel was just an abandoned building and parking lot. They watched the QLine and Little Ceasers Arena go up, as did their rent. And so they packed up their things and very mean cat and reluctantly decided to move out to the neighborhoods. They settled into West Village, not realizing that they'd find themselves never wanting to leave. Rachael and Dan joined the Indian Village tennis club where they met what are now some of their closest friends. After a few years of apartment living, they decided to do something crazy. Just down the street from their apartment, there was a big green house in need of a lot of rehab that went up for sale. With help and encouragement, they crafted up a vision to turn the house into a multi-unit home to live on the first floor and rent out the upper units. Three years and several plumbing nightmares later, that house is now filled with incredible people. Along the way, they also added two dogs to their pack. To celebrate Dan's 30th birthday, they headed down to Rachael's family cabin in Tenessee. Dan and their friends crafted up a secret plan to make this more than a birthday trip. On a hike once they reached the waterfall at the summit, Dan popped the question and everyone popped champagne. That's where this story ends, until July 26 that is.
