Los Angeles International Airport Typically the most affordable option with the most flight availability. LAX is about 1.5–2 hours from Santa Barbara, depending on traffic. Renting a car is recommended.

Santa Barbara Airport The closest airport, located just 10–15 minutes from downtown Santa Barbara. Flights may be more limited and slightly more expensive, but it’s the most convenient option.

Rental Car

Rental Cars

If you plan to fly into Los Angeles (LAX), we recommend renting a car for the drive to Santa Barbara. The drive is approximately 1.5–2 hours depending on traffic and is a beautiful trip along the coast. Rental cars are also helpful for getting around Santa Barbara, especially if you plan to explore nearby beaches, wineries, or other attractions. If you fly into Santa Barbara Airport (SBA), a rental car is optional. Many hotels, restaurants, and the Harbor are located close together, and Uber/Lyft are readily available. If you're traveling with a group, renting a car from LAX can be a more cost-effective option and makes it easy to explore the area at your own pace.

Amtrak

For those flying into Los Angeles, Amtrak’s Pacific Surfliner is a convenient and scenic way to travel to Santa Barbara. From LAX, you can take a short ride (Uber or shuttle) to Los Angeles Union Station, where the train departs. The ride to Santa Barbara takes about 2.5–3 hours and runs along the coast for part of the journey. The Santa Barbara station is located downtown and close to most hotels. This is a great option if you prefer not to rent a car or want to enjoy a more relaxed trip up the coast.
