Karema and Damon met the new-fashioned way, on Bumble of course! They started exchanging messages in the summer of 2017. Their first “meeting” was via FaceTime chatting in their PJs. Their first date was the Friday of Labor Day weekend, September 1, 2017. They met at El Centro for tacos and an impromptu tequila tasting followed. A brush stroke of genius led them to their second date, a wine and paint class. Despite their amateur artistic abilities, they had a great time, so they started hanging out every weekend, stayed in constant contact, and the rest is history.

Damon knew that it'd be tough to surprise Karema, so to he enlisted help from a few of her close friends to help arrange a romantic proposal. On January 30, 2019, a cold, and random, winter evening, Damon set the mood in Karema’s dining room with dozens of roses, candles, string lights, champagne, and photos of the two hanging throughout. This effort required a clandestine approach to avoid ruining the surprise, including a duck and cover approach to entry/exit to avoid the home security cameras. Karema, who thought she’d know when the proposal was coming, was indeed very surprised and joyfully said “yes!”
