Though we grew up only blocks apart in Boulder and attended the same schools for years, Dale and I somehow never officially met. He was a few years ahead of me in school and part of my brother’s class, and we both spent much of our time involved in competitive sports in the community. We knew of each other, but our story had not started yet. In 2025, after I organized our high school reunion, Dale reached out after missing the event and asked if I’d like to meet up sometime. What felt like a simple catch-up quickly became something much more meaningful. We realized we had spent years unknowingly moving through the same places — from the same local hangouts to the same gyms where Dale coached athletes and trained clients. Since reconnecting, we’ve spent the last year making up for lost time by traveling across the U.S., Mexico, and Portugal together. During a five-week trip through Portugal earlier this year, Dale proposed at a romantic castle in the fairy tale city of Sintra, proving that sometimes the best love stories simply take the scenic route.
