Josh and Crystal met as friends through their college years. They were both active at UT's University Catholic Center (UCC), and had a lot of mutual friends there. Even though Josh went to school at St. Edwards (some people to this day will be surprised to hear that probably!), he was on UT campus 2-3x a week getting to know the community. When they first met, Crystal paid little attention to Josh, and vice versa. Josh remembers teasing Crystal about being a hermit, because she was always off to go studying. Crystal just knew Josh as the "guy who plays guitar"... Years go by. Josh graduates college and starts working in Austin, while Crystal finishes up her last year in school. During the Summer, a group of friends start a weekly volleyball group, and Crystal and Josh are reintroduced. Josh quickly realizes that there is a spark, and while dropping her off after volleyball one day, tells her his intentions of getting to know her better. They go on a few dates, eat a lot of food, talk about their life history and experiences - and realize slowly but surely that they 'click'. On midnight or 1am of Dec. 8, 2015, in the midst of studying for her very last final of undergrad, Josh asks Crystal to be his girlfriend in the Shrine. She proceeds to say yes, and then barely miss the mark on the exam, forcing her to take an extra semester to retake that nutrition course. It worked out in the end, when she graduated and quickly found her first job with Whole Kids Foundation (today she has moved on to work at the Texas Department of Agriculture)!
Like many couples, Crystal and Josh have many different personality traits. While Josh is very practical-minded and quick tempered, Crystal complements him with her calmness and creatively driven solutions. Josh also complements Crystal by being a planner, and teaching her how to use her iPhone. Together, they rooted themselves as a couple in their city of Austin, TX - attending concerts, going on hikes, eating at food trucks, and becoming more involved with the Schoenstatt Movement. They also started rock climbing together as a couple. Together, they also made many visits to their hometowns of San Angelo and Houston, TX to meet family/friends, and share experiences of growing up in different environments and cultures. One of the things that Crystal is thankful for about Josh’s Taiwanese culture is all the buns, dumplings, chinese vegetables, and bubble tea that she now loves. On the other hand, Josh is thankful for the Hispanic family that he's been welcomed into, and that he is able to appreciate his background even more because of Crystal’s curiosity and openness. What drew them together and kept them together is their attachment to the Shrine and the Schoenstatt Family of Austin. Through Schoenstatt, they grew in love for one another. They visit the Shrine weekly to pray and ask for the Blessed Mother to educate them in love. Their community of professional men and women are also there to support them every step of the way.
On the morning of October 18, 2018, he asked, "Will you take a death leap with me?" She said, "Yes!"
