John arrived in NYC the summer of 2018 with the hopes to find something different from his easy existence that he built in New Orleans. Happy yet lonely, stuck but free, wanting more and satisfied, these conflicting thoughts were enough to make him see what else was out there. Crissy, on the other hand, had been in the Big Apple for 17 years. She had clawed her way up the corporate ladder to a place most young New Yorkers will only dream of while swing dancing the nights away. Individually, both were not unlucky at love, but did not seem to meet the right one. When John was around 38, his father said to him in casual conversation, “Well, it doesn’t seem you’re ever going to have kids.” And Crissy had started the adoption process determined to be a mom. Making the best of their own circumstances, they met and began messaging on a dating site. Trying to play it cool, they talked at 1st about the things people talk about on dating sites. Anyway, John kept asking her out and started to feel like he was being strung along. He thought about confronting Crissy in a curt message, but instead, sent her a message that said, “Hey, I’m trying to meet you (admittedly stolen song lyric; see Pixies song: “Hey”). Crissy thought this was sweet, and that his profile mentioned his mom so she agreed to a date. They met up at an Italian restaurant in Ft. Greene at the bar. They walked around all night and talked. It got late and Crissy called a cab. John was not sure how the date was going. He was enamored, but did not want to mess anything up. He had done so well so far in the evening. Shortly, thereafter, Crissy felt off and did not know what it was. She went to the doctor, and lo and behold, she was pregnant. 9 short months later, Violet was born, and ever since then, they have been building their family. Whether it’s in New Orleans, in Brooklyn, or hiding out in Crissy’s mom’s house in Syracuse, they’ve been doing it together, and they decided that it’s a pretty amazing life they are lucky to do together.
