Downtown Durango is full of cool shops, excellent restaurants, and historic buildings. We recommend these restaurants: Diamond Belle at The Strater Hotel: Ask the concierge to point out some of the hidden cabinets and false panels around the Saloon. The waitresses dress up in old time garments if you want to grab a bite to eat and soak in some of the old Wild West atmosphere. Steamworks Brewery: We LOVE the seasonal beer "Prescribed Burn" which is brewed with the region's famous green chili. Chimayo Stone Fired Kitchen: American cuisine with lots of variety and a focus on oven fired pizza, reasonably priced. Carvers Brewery
Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad & Museum is right downtown!
Here are some local restaurants we have really enjoyed: Kennebec Cafe (4 Co Rd 124, Hesperus, CO 81326): This restaurant is our family's top pick, conveniently located near the Ridgewood Event Center in Hesperus. The map location is set to the Kennebec Cafe. Gazpacho (431 E 2nd Ave, Durango, CO 81301): Authentic New Mexican cuisine. Highly recommended. Zia Taqueria Serious Texas Bar-B-Q
La Plata Canyon is a beautiful day hike spot with campgrounds near the river and a waterfall farther up the road that you can hike or drive to. This hike is located near the Ridgewood Event Center.
The drive to Silverton from Durango is breathtaking, and it is well worth the trip to go see the old mining town of Silverton. Please be warned, while the drive is spectacularly gorgeous it is not for the faint of heart.
