Doug and Katie met on a dating app called Bumble. For those of you who don't know, Bumble is one of those apps where you "swipe" through potential partners, and when two people both "swipe right" on someone, they are connected to be able to chat. On April 19, 2017, the two had matched and Katie reached out to say "hello" to Doug. He promptly began complaining about a crazy work week, but couched it with, "Trying to stay positive. Talking to a pretty girl helps a bit." Hook, line, and sinker. They met for a lunch date at Millworks in Harrisburg soon after, and the rest is history!
Let's start out this story by noting two things: 1) Katie is extremely hard to surprise; 2) Doug is a terrible liar. Katie knew when Doug went ring shopping. She was on a cruise to the Bahamas and had fifteen minutes of Wi-Fi the entire trip. She tried to video call Doug, but he wouldn't answer. He texted back saying that he was out with his Dad and could not video chat even for a moment. Okay... why else would he not be able to video chat for just a second!? Suspicious. But later on when confronted, Doug admitted he went shopping, but presented a sob story of not being able to find anything and it being very discouraging. He threw Katie off the trail...mostly. Katie also knew to look for that guitar because Doug's serenading melts her heart. So when Doug came over on July 3rd and said he brought his guitar with him to jam with our friend at the July 4th Cookout, she thought, "yeah right. it's happening!" But, nope. July 3rd came and went, and Doug actually did just jam with our friend on July 4th. July 5th was a Thursday, and Doug always leaves for work from Katie's house on Thursdays to work from Noon to 9pm. Katie left for work that morning knowing that a proposal was not forthcoming - it couldn't be today because Doug was working, tomorrow was her birthday and he wouldn't mix the two, she wouldn't see him Saturday, and Sunday they were going to his parents' house. And, Katie thought, "if he has a ring at all, he couldn't keep it a secret for THAT long, so he must not have one and must have been telling the truth. It's going to be a while then." She was completely surprised to walk into her apartment after work to find it filled with balloons, flowers, and candles. Doug was in the center of the room playing his guitar. He sat Katie on a chair in front of him, and played and sang "Perfect" by Ed Sheeran to her. He called over Hamilton, who had the ring in a pouch around his neck, got down on one knee, and asked her to marry him. She, obviously, said yes.
