John and Christina were introduced to each other by their Uncle Nick. Wait, let's back up for a moment to clarify one thing--John & Christina are NOT kissing cousins. They do, however, share an "Uncle Nick" who happens to be related to John by blood, and to Christina by way of family friendship. While visiting Oak Lawn Toyota on a bitterly cold day in February of 2016, Uncle Nick and his daughter Bessie struck up a conversation with Christina about her dating life. When Christina revealed that she was, in fact single, Uncle Nick proclaimed: "We need to find you a good Greek boy." With those words, he had just the guy in mind: John Wonais. Sensing Christina's hesitation at being fixed up, Bessie said, "At least let me show you a picture..." After seeing John's picture, Christina concealed her excitement (admittedly, not very well) and agreed to a simple introduction with John. The fix-up was underway. Shortly thereafter, while walking home from work, John noticed a voicemail from his Uncle Nick. He instantly thought to himself, ‘This is weird, he usually only calls to hang out on the weekends.’ John returned Uncle Nick’s phone call and was taken aback when Uncle Nick abruptly asked whether or not his nephew was single. After confirmation that he was, Uncle Nick responded, “If you’re interested, I have a nice, beautiful girl for you to meet. And whatever you do, be a gentleman.” John thought this might be too good to be true, so he told his uncle that he would think about it. A few pictures of Christina later and John was firing off a text. John likes to think that he said something really smooth when reaching out to Christina. In reality, any first message where you mention your uncle and a date within the first few sentences probably isn’t great. But whatever he said, worked. On March 24, 2016, John and Christina met for drinks at Gilt Bar in Chicago. Almost two years later, on February 17, 2018, John proposed to Christina and she emphatically said, “yes!”
