Our Proposal Story

July 1, 2024

Sophia's POV - The sun was starting to set after our day-long beach excursion in Rincón, Puerto Rico. We had spent the day relaxing and lounging in the water, sunbathing on the sand, and eating amazing seafood. I had also finally gotten my hands on some ripe mangoes and was so excited to dig into them! Out of blue, Collin asked if I would be interested in seeing the sunset. Prior, we agreed to not drive at night because of the narrow and windy mountain roads, so the suggestion struck me as unusual. But, I wasn't driving, so I shrugged and trusted he knew what he was doing. We found a secluded spot with a bench and a ceiba tree for shade and I started what I came there to do—watch the sunset and eat the mangoes. We had no utensils, so we had to be creative. I started explaining to Collin my three-step method for eating a mango like a juice pouch. Out of nowhere, he interrupts me and says, "That's great, Sophia, but I have something to tell you..." Collin's POV - Throughout the whole trip, the ring box had been burning a hole in my pocket—figuratively and literally because Puerto Rico at peak summer is blazing hot. I had been waiting for the right moment to propose, but it wasn't until this leg in Rincón that everything felt perfect. Located on the western most point of the island, it is noted for its breathtaking sunsets. After a relaxing day on the beach, a wonderful meal, and fresh fruit from a roadside stall, everything felt just right. Despite the treacherous mountain roads we would need to take to get back to our hotel, it was too perfect to pass up. As we drove up to a popular viewing point, I noticed a secluded spot overlooking the ocean with a bench next to a big ceiba tree. I couldn’t believe we had the place all to ourselves. As soon as we sat down, Sophia immediately went deep into these mangos. As I waited for the sun to set and a pause in Sophia’s passionate narration on the proper way to eat a mango without utensils, I could feel my heart beating louder and faster. As more time passed people started to pull up behind us, and just barely in view down the cliffside, another couple proposed right in front of us! Sophia, still engrossed in the mango, doesn’t even notice. With the sunset almost at its most striking orange hue, and still the overlook to ourselves, I knew my window of opportunity was now, if I could I could get her attention away from fruit for a moment: “That's great, Sophia, but I have something to tell you . . . I am tired of being your boyfriend (she gasps) . . . I want to be your husband!”
