Flight

Charlottesville Airport (CHO)

Charlottesville airport (CHO) is approximately 20 minutes from the downtown area and is the most convenient option if you are able to find a reasonable flight itinerary. CHO offers direct flights to ATL, CLT, ORD, LGA, PHL, and IAD as well as many other connecting options.

Richmond (RIC)

RIC is approximately 90 minutes to Charlottesville by car. This airport tends to offer a few more direct flight options than CHO.

Washington Dulles (IAD)

Located in Northern VA, Dulles airport has byfar the most direct flight options and is located about 2 hours from Charlottesville. Those traveling greater distances may prefer to fly direct into IAD and drive the remaining distance rather than take a connecting flight to CHO - either option is effective so its all a matter of preference.

Train

Amtrak

Amtrak is another option from the DC area and points north, as the Charlottesville Amtrak station is located conveniently between The Downtown Mall and UVA Grounds. This is a very reasonable transportation option from the DC area. Be advised that if you are traveling from points north of DC, the train typically makes a 30 minute stop in DC to switch engines which adds to the total trip duration.

Traveling by Car

Driving is byfar the best option for those traveling from anywhere in Virginia and a reasonable option for those coming in from North Carolina, Maryland and Pennsylvania. When driving in from locations around DC and North, it is generally suggested to take US-29 in lieu of I-95 to avoid potentially significant construction delays in the Stafford and Fredericksburg areas.
