Just a 15-minute ferry ride from Paihia, this quaint historic town is perfect for a relaxed day of waterfront walks, local shops, and lunch by the harbour.
Cole’s hometown! We recommend visiting the Stone Store, New Zealand’s oldest stone building. It’s a beautiful riverside spot with a great café (also one of NZ's oldest buildings) and restaurant, making it an ideal morning or afternoon pitstop. (We may be a little biased, though…this is where Cole told Catalina he loved her for the first time :P). Kerikeri is around 30 minutes from Paihia/Waitangi.
One of NZ's most important historic sites, overlooking the Bay of Islands. We highly recommend visiting Te Kōngahu Museum of Waitangi, which “weaves together the stories and taonga (treasured objects) which bring to life the history of Waitangi and Aotearoa New Zealand’s founding documents”.
One of our favourite things to do in the Bay of Islands is beach hopping! The coastline is dotted with stunning beaches, so there’s plenty to choose from. Some of our favourites are Mahinepua Peninsula, Matauri Bay, Taupō Bay, and Te Tengaere Bay. If you’re visiting Russell by car (via the car ferry), we also highly recommend Elliot Bay. It’s where our engagement photos were taken!
