One of the most important pilgrimage sites in the world! It is made up of two basilicas stacked on top of each other, both covered in breathtaking 13th-century frescoes. The Upper Basilica houses Giotto's famous Life of St. Francis cycle, while the Lower Basilica is filled with intricate multi-chapel frescoes — richly layered and worth taking your time with. Below both is the Crypt, where St. Francis is buried. Entry is completely free, and audio guides are available for €8 at the Information Office in the lower square.
A well-preserved medieval fortress perched above Assisi with sweeping panoramic views over the Umbrian plains.
Right on Assisi's central piazza — a strikingly intact Roman temple from the 1st century BC that stops most visitors in their tracks. An easy stop while wandering the old town.
Spello (15 min from Assisi) The most effortless day trip and arguably the most charming. Spello is famous for being one of the prettiest villages in Italy — its meandering medieval streets are lined with flower-covered balconies and colorful window boxes. Perugia (30 min from Assisi) Umbria's lively capital and a city with real depth. At the heart of Piazza IV Novembre sits the Fontana Maggiore — a 13th-century fountain considered one of the most important and best preserved in all of Italy, decorated with dozens of sculpted reliefs depicting medieval agricultural life and local legend. Spoleto (45 min from Assisi) A medieval city with a dramatic, less-visited feel. The highlight is the Ponte delle Torri — a stunning 14th-century aqueduct bridge spanning a deep wooded gorge, perfect for photos. The Rocca Albornoziana, a 14th-century fortress that served as both a military garrison and papal residence, is now a museum with beautifully preserved rooms.
