Things To Do

Instead of writing a Gallatin Valley Travel Guide, we have just summarized some things or attractions that we have enjoyed ourselves. Look at the bottom of the page for a travel guide that we think is useful.
Sacajawea Peak Trail

Sacajawea Peak Trail

Shafthouse, Wilsall, MT 59086

This is our favorite hike in the area, by far! It's short (~4 miles round-trip) with ~1,900' of elevation gain, making it moderately difficult. The road to the trail head is a little gnarly, but any car with decent clearance can make it. The geology is unrivaled. You'll walk the entire Cretaceous-Devonian section and see some spectacular compressional structural features.

Area Day Hikes

Area Day Hikes

Bozeman, MT 59717

We could name hundreds of day hikes in the region, but rather than painstakingly describe them ourselves this website does a fantastic job on its own.

Fly Fishing

Fly Fishing

Three Forks, MT 59752

The Gallatin Valley is home to some of the best fly fishing in the country and September is one of the best times of the year to take advantage of it. A day on any of the rivers around Three Forks would be hard to beat!

Missouri Headwaters State Park

Missouri Headwaters State Park

1585 Trident Road, Three Forks, MT 59752

Not only does it mark the headwaters of the mighty Missouri River, Lewis and Clark camped here on their way west in 1805. Additionally, there are some fantastic exposures of the Mississippian Misson Canyon here.

Museum of the Rockies

Museum of the Rockies

600 W Kagy Blvd, Bozeman, MT 59717

This museum is a great place to learn about Montana history on both the geologic and human time scales. They've got a great dinosaur exhibit!

Lewis and Clark Caverns

Lewis and Clark Caverns

25 Lewis & Clark Caverns Road, Whitehall, MT 59759

This cave system is spectacular and has a very interesting history. Definitely worth checking out- last day to visit in 2019 is September 30th!

Yellowstone National Park

Yellowstone National Park

WY 82190-0168

If you haven't been before this is a perfect time of year to go!

For all the days along the way
