Our Story of Flood, Friendship and Family

From LaHouse to Home

After no one else could solve malfunctioning lighting controls at LaHouse, Claudette's high-performance home educational demo at LSU, the campus master trouble-shooter, Brent, came to the rescue with tenacity and good humor. This was shortly after the flood of 2016 in which Brent lost almost everything he owned. Dialogue at LaHouse matched Brent's need for moonlighting work with Claudette's very long list of backlogged home improvement projects. Completing a 3-page list of tasks, and Brent's personality galore, sprouted a friendship that blossomed and grew over the years. We became best friends, sharing lots of laughter and silly fun, helping each other as only great friends do, joining each other's hobbies, and spending time with each other's daughters. Claudette discovered the serene joys of hiking and kayaking, although tent and hammock camping adventures were a mixed bag. Brent took on the challenge of ballroom dancing and surprisingly grew to enjoy it, continued to expand his repertoire, and basked in the accolade of being dubbed "the dancing couple" at events. Both of us enjoy working together on DIY home renovation projects and took great pride in restoring the Hanks house in New Iberia that Claudette inherited, which we now enjoy as our "camp" for periodic escapes to walkable small town events, nature's beauty on the bayou, and great cajun food. Likewise, we both love to travel, especially via cruising, to explore and experience different places, sights, activities and, of course, foods. For years, neither of us expected to become more than best friends. In fact, we had deemed each other "not a good fit" to be a couple. Well, we obviously finally changed our minds! Now, we see that our differences complement each other and fill each other's voids and needs. We also share much in common, and that has grown as we have ventured into each other's favorite interests and bonded with each other's families. We're a good team. Rooted in friendship, our love and commitment are nurtured with understanding, service, affection, affirmations and bringing joy into each others lives. We are family! We are home!
