Greek wedding

10/18/25

A Greek wedding is renowned for its vibrant traditions, lively celebrations, and deep-rooted cultural significance. Here's what makes a Greek wedding unique: Ceremony in the Greek Orthodox Church: Greek weddings are typically held in a Greek Orthodox Church, filled with rich symbolism and rituals. The ceremony includes significant acts like the exchanging of rings, the lighting of candles, and the ceremonial walk around the altar, all representing unity and the joining of two lives. The Koumbaros/Koumbara: Similar to a best man or maid of honor, the koumbaros (male) or koumbara (female) plays a pivotal role, participating in the ceremony by exchanging the rings and crowning the couple with stefana (wedding crowns). These crowns, connected by a ribbon, symbolize the couple's union and presence of God in the marriage. Traditional Music and Dancing: Music and dance are integral to Greek weddings, with traditional Greek folk songs and dances like the Kalamatianos and Tsamiko getting everyone on their feet. The joyous atmosphere is intoxicating, encouraging full participation from all guests. Plate Smashing: Although more common at celebratory events rather than weddings today, plate smashing has symbolized abundance and the willingness to let go of earthly possessions in celebration. It's often replaced with safer but equally lively activities involving music and dance. We will not be doing plate smashing. The Dance of Isaiah: Performed during the ceremony, the newlyweds are led in a procession three times around the altar. Named after the prophet Isaiah, this symbolizes their first steps together as a married couple. Blessing with Sugar Almonds (Koufeta): Koufeta, or sugar-coated almonds, are offered to guests in odd numbers (usually five or seven) and symbolize purity, fertility, and the sweetness and bitterness of life.
