We (like most DC residents) love brunch. Sampling new foods and drinks while laughing with old friends is a perfect way to spend any late Sunday morning (or really any day). But as delightful as brunch is, it seldom changes your life. But one brunch in the summer of 2016 did just that for us. A few weeks after finishing his first year of law school, Danny started his summer associate program with K&L Gates. Christina had moved to DC only a few months earlier to start her career on the Hill. As luck would have it, they had a mutual friend named Ana. Ana, a colleague of Christina and a college friend of Danny, invited Danny to a brunch at Christina’s house. Danny and Christina hit it off right away, first with their shared affinity for mimosas, bagels, and cheese but then with their common interests in politics, travel, and the West Wing. The West Wing is one of Christina’s favorite shows, and one of Danny’s obsessions (Josiah Bartlet 2024). Over $3 tacos and $5 beers at Capitol Lounge, Danny and Christina argued over the best characters and plot lines. Shortly thereafter, they went on their first date. Over the last 5 years, Christina and Danny have traversed DC; shared a home, first in the H Street Corridor and then in Logan Circle; adventured in Mexico City, San Juan, Philly, Austin, Atlanta, and Boothbay, Maine; made some beautiful friendships; adopted a sweet/adorable/terrifying/rude dog (we love you Lincoln) and supported each other in their careers and personal lives. We cherish these last 5 years and will cherish all the years to come. We look forward to celebrating the first day of the rest of our years with the people who have been there for us, separately and together, from the beginning.
