Question

Is St. Alphonsa a Catholic Church?

Answer

Yes, we are a Catholic Church. We are an eastern Syrian rite, instituted by St. Thomas the Apostle. We encourage all those who have not experienced the Syro-Malabar Catholic rite to explore the church and its rich history! You can read more about it here: https://stthomasdiocese.org/about-the-syro-malabar-church/

Question

Do I have to be Catholic to attend the ceremony?

Answer

Absolutely not! Anyone and everyone is welcome to witness our celebration! Please note however that receiving communion (the small wafer distributed by the priest) during the ceremony is reserved for practicing Catholics as it is a profession of faith and a sign of our unity with the global Catholic community and our faith in Jesus Christ. Thank you for understanding and if you have any questions please feel free to reach out to us or read more here: https://www.usccb.org/prayer-and-worship/the-mass/order-of-mass/liturgy-of-the-eucharist/guidelines-for-the-reception-of-communion
