We were both biochemistry majors in the same year at Notre Dame. However, after a year and a half of classes, our paths didn't really cross. That all changed when we co-interviewed for a summer service program in the spring of sophomore year. In this three-person interview, Chris saw how sweet and caring Katy was, and Katy already saw husband potential in Chris. That weekend, at a biochemistry party (because we were both quite cool), we hit it off; the next weekend, we had our first date and watched "Finding Nemo." Despite only seeing each other a few times that summer, and Katy studying abroad in Mexico that next semester, we knew we had something special. Our relationship blossomed, and we haven't looked back!

While living in dorms on opposite ends of campus in college, we often joked that we were in a long-distance relationship. However, after graduating Notre Dame in May 2015, we moved to different cities for grad school. Chris started a biochemistry PhD program in Bloomington, and Katy moved further south to Nashville for medical school. Despite the distance, our relationship grew stronger throughout grad school. Then, halfway through our third year, we took the next big step...

We always loved spending time outdoors, and came to love the Smokies while living in the southeast. While Katy was on a rotation in Guatemala, Chris enthusiastically volunteered to plan a weekend in the Smokies over Easter weekend "because Katy didn't have wifi that often." About a month later, while hiking on a beautiful spring day, Chris popped the question...on the edge of a cliff!
