There is a man named Christopher who had a dream about Burma. This dream led him to a job in Houston, Texas working with Burmese refugees. Ten years have passed since he left his home in Indiana. He has made friends along the way and witnessed incredible stories unfold as he has worked faithfully at what God puts before him. There is a woman named Emily whose dreams had all fallen apart. She found herself furloughed during the COVID pandemic and eventually accepted a job opportunity in Houston. Six years later, she rejoices in the community and home she has found there. While getting settled in Houston, Christopher accidentally went to the wrong church. A lady at the car insurance office recommended “Hope City” to Chris. By mistake, he went to “Hope Church” instead. Unlike Chris, Emily’s friend recommended Hope Church to her. Due to pandemic shut downs, Emily forgot about it entirely until several months later she googled “closest churches near me”. She felt at home at Hope Church instantly but never noticed Chris. For several years Chris and Emily went to church together, occasionally saying hi to each other but nothing more than that. Even so, Chris noticed Emily’s fiery heart and love for many cultures and thought well of her. One day Emily joined an internship working with refugees and moved to an apartment complex in a completely different part of town. When Emily shared this with her pastor he was surprised and told her, “That’s where Chris Block lives! Chris and I have been praying for years for others to move to that complex and partner with him!” Chris and Emily partnered together over the next two years, but still remained just acquaintances. Then one summer Emily had heart surgery. Chris and his roommate Keegan kindly offered to give her a ride to church as she was recovering. Over time they realized carpooling made a lot of sense because of the longer commute. Sometimes they went grocery shopping on their way home after church. Emily noticed how Chris treated others, often offering to pray for them. Through a weekly neighborhood prayer meeting they both attended, they got to know each other better. After Emily’s surgery, she began to pray more seriously about her desire to be married and have a family. Quite honestly, she felt discouraged and hopeless. But her brother Samuel brought her some encouragement one day and challenged her to remain hopeful. Little did she know, at the same time Chris had talked with his mentors about asking Emily out. Next Sunday at church, Emily noticed Chris for the first time. She and Chris attended a meeting after the service about cross-cultural work with their church. It was there she saw that Chris shared the same passion she had. She prayed each day after asking God for clarity about her feelings. A week later Chris asked to sit next to her at church and asked, “What kind of coffee appliances do you have in your home?”. Emily knew something was up and was caught off guard that God had answered her prayer so quickly. A few days later, Chris went to a friend's house for dinner and prayed that if he was supposed to ask Emily out that she would be there too. When he pulled up he noticed Emily’s car in the driveway. By the end of the evening, Chris had asked her out and Emily had given Chris her first “Yes”. From go-carts, to cross-country road trips, a “yes” to being boyfriend and girlfriend, sharing stories, and celebrating each other's best friend’s weddings, their relationship blossomed. Emily realized that being around Chris made her a better person. The two fell in love and began to dream of a future together, which leads to the final “Yes” of this story. Chris bought a beautiful yellow diamond ring and asked Emily to marry him. She said, “Yes”! As they look forward to April they realize the vows they share will be just the beginning of more “Yes’s” to come. They are overjoyed to share this special time of celebration with you.
