How We Met

From long-distance, to no distance at all

It all started at a Heinen-Lawton Christmas party in 2019. Cheyenne's cousin, Alysha, is married to Alex's friend, Josh. Hanging out on the couch at Alysha's house, Josh and Alysha thought they'd be a great match because Alex is a teacher and Cheyenne was becoming one. They decided to follow each other on Instagram, liking each other photos for months on end, but never talking to each other. Come the summertime, Josh, Alysha, and Alex went on a hike together in the Adirondacks. Alex kept saying, "Alysha, your cousin is so beautiful." Cheyenne tried to play "hard to get" by not giving Alex her phone number, but a SnapChat (social media) account to be friends and talk on. They talked nearly everyday on the app by sharing photos of adventures, lakes, pets, and day-to-day activities. Cheyenne ripped the bandaid off in early August 2020 and coordinated an impromptu visit to Josh and Alysha's house to meet Alex the next day. Cheyenne drove three and half hours from Ellenville on a Friday night to have a double date together the next day. All four of them went on a date to The Red Sun in Oswego and watched the sunset at the bluffs. They had their official first date at Mimi's Diner in Fulton. Cheyenne and Alex started dating shortly after, when he invited her up to Oswego for another visit. He took her to the bluffs again where he asked her to be his girlfriend and their long-distance relationship began on September 18, 2020. If you asked Alex how they'd managed such a good relationship from many miles away, he'd say, "If you want something that bad, you'll do whatever it takes." Alex never ceased to surprise Cheyenne and made her feel loved, even though they lived on opposite sides of the state. Every month he'd send her flowers or Edible Arrangements with a sweet or silly note and they talked on the phone every night. Once Alex dropped the L-word on the phone one night, he asked, "Is it too soon to say 'I love you?'" Cheyenne said, "I don't know. I don't think there's a manual for this." Needless to say, their relationship thrived on long phone calls, sweet (literally) surprises, sarcasm, and endless love and support. Come April of 2021, Cheyenne landed a long-term substitute teaching job during her student-teaching and moved to Central New York in less than a week. She lived in an Airbnb for three months while she taught and searched for a full-time teaching job. Once she was hired at Fulton CSD, she and Alex moved into an apartment together for a year, and eventually moved into their home in June of 2022. Since living together, they got a boxer puppy and four chickens and renovated a beautiful starter home. Cheyenne showed Alex a new appreciation of the world by traveling and they have seen France, Scotland, England, Ireland, and Alaska together. Alex showed Cheyenne the beauty of nature and hiking. They have hiked many high peak mountains in the Adirondacks. They've acquired new hobbies and talents. Alex and Cheyenne are both teachers at rival school districts, which makes for really fun football games. They push each other to be better people and teachers to serve children the best they can everyday. They share a love of children and sharing their passions with them. They also love every minute they get to spend together, be it a Domino's date-night, a drive to the store, making dinner together, a weekend trip to Lake Placid, or just sitting on the couch together. Every minute spent together is a minute valued and a minute longer of loving each other more.
