How We Found Each Other (Twice)

Charles and Amelia first crossed paths in 1993 at the wedding of her lifelong best friend, Hayley, to his brother, Paul. Neither remembers meeting. Thirty years followed — years in which Amelia knew his parents well, saw them often when they visited Columbus, and heard his name more than a few times. They existed in each other’s orbit without ever quite overlapping. Their families, for the record, had thoughts about that. In 2021, Hayley and Paul’s oldest son, Connor, was marrying Ivy. Both Charles and Amelia would be there. Both were single. The stage was set. The night before the wedding, at the rehearsal dinner, Amelia helped Charles load wine into the back of a car — then her ride arrived and she was gone before the conversation could go anywhere. They’d have to try again tomorrow. The next day, Charles spotted Amelia and her mother out shopping, on a mission to find a fishing vest for her son, Noah. He filed that away. That evening at the wedding, he asked her about it, and somewhere in the conversation, the thirty-year gap closed. He made sure the night ran smoothly — sparklers, logistics, everyone in the right car at the right time — and Amelia went home Sunday not quite sure what to make of him, but thinking about it. On Wednesday, a fishing vest arrived on her doorstep. Right size. Short note. That was the beginning.
