Santa Cruz perfectly captures everything we love about the California coast. Enjoy the many beautiful state beaches and one of the world's most famous surfing spots at the Lane. Eat up at one of many laid-back, delicious restaurants- we love Verve Coffee and Steamer Lane Supply. And if you haven't had enough time in the forest after the weekend, check out Henry Cowell State Park- a favorite of ours for hiking and spotting the famous Santa Cruz banana slugs!
The city by the bay needs no introduction, but some of our favorite spots are: Restaurants, Coffee, and Bars: L'Ardoise ("our" place), Burma Love, Iza Ramen, Toronado, Tartine Bakery (of course!), Cafe Reveille, Pizzeria Delfina, Jane Outdoors: Land's End and Sutro Baths, Dolores Park (on Sunday afternoon!), Twin Peaks (gorgeous view!) Hidden Gems: The Wave Organ, 16 Ave Tiled Steps
One of the world's most spectacular coastlines. You can enjoy driving down curvy Route 1 or get a better view by hiking up the hills in Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park (where Madison and her sister recently backpacked to some hot springs!) You can also check out one of the mant mindfulness and meditation centers along the 1, such as Esalen- where Madison went to a semi-silent retreat in 2021. Big Sur is Madison's favorite part of California (besides the Sierras!) Check conditions ahead of time since the highway is frequently closed due to rain.
Check out the place where it all began (specifically, the Unit 3 Norton dorm)! Known for its food, history, and culture, Berkeley is worth a day trip to the East Bay. Stroll through the beautiful campus and checkout Chez Panisse and other restaurants that pioneered the farm-to-table movement. We are huge fans of the Cheeseboard Collective, East Bay Spice Company, and if you can make it to Oakland, Homeroom (gourmet Mac n' Cheese).
