In the fateful summer of 2019, Chantal and Nitesh were both interning at the World Resources Institute in Washington, DC. Chantal had just returned from studying abroad in Bologna, Italy for the first year of her Masters program, and Nitesh had just moved to the United States the year prior to pursue his Masters as well. During the first week of her internship, it was hard for Chantal to miss Nitesh, who was seated two desks away from her and playing with Legos for “work.” At a team happy hour, they easily connected over their multicultural upbringings and ended up chatting with each other almost all evening. Having moved to Knoxville, Tennessee for Nitesh’s PhD, Chantal and Nitesh took advantage of the nearby Great Smoky Mountains to go on frequent hikes. On June 20, 2021, they were on a trail to Mount LeConte when Chantal’s ankle started hurting. They decided to turn around and stopped to sit and eat their lunch under an overhang named Alum Cave. After Nitesh had helped her to her feet, Chantal turned around to find that Nitesh was down again - on one knee. At a celebratory dinner that evening at their favorite Thai restaurant, Chantal enlisted the help of the wait staff to surprise Nitesh with a counter-proposal. . . . . .
